| The show is set in the village of Anatevka, Russia, in 1905, and deals with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife Golde, and their five daughters to cope with their harsh existence. Tzeitel, the oldest daughter, marries a poor tailor after Tevye had promised her to a well-to-do middle-aged butcher. Hodel, the second daughter, marries a revolutionary and follows him to Siberia. Chava, the third daughter, marries out of her faith. When, at the end, the Czar’s Cossacks destroy the Jewish homes in Anatevka, Tevye, still holding fast to his faith and traditions, prepares to take what is left of his family to America |
